The name kwacha derives from the NyanjaBemba, and Tonga language word for "dawn", alluding to the Zambian nationalist slogan of a "new dawn of freedom", symbolizes fresh beginnings and the hope for continued progress. Zambia's currency is also called the Kwacha. This series reflects on Zambian culture, combining social commentary with cultural symbols that celebrate the country’s rich heritage and ongoing growth. Through each piece, I explore Zambia’s traditions, symbolism and daily life, while acknowledging the challenges and triumphs that shape the people. Each piece blends cultural symbols, history and social commentary to challenge the status quo, while celebrating the resilience and spirit of our people.
Kokoliko, the sound of a rooster's crow at dawn, is an onomatopoeic word that symbolizes the start of a new day. It captures the essence of waking up, a fresh beginning, and the promise of what lies ahead. In this series, I use kokoliko as a metaphor for waking up to the truth. It’s a visual invitation to reclaim our awareness, question the narratives we’re fed, and embrace a new dawn of understanding.
